D. D. Palmer is acknowledged as the discoverer of chiropractic. In 1895, Palmer was living in Devenport, Iowa. There he knew a deaf janitor name Harvey Lillard. Harvey had been in an accident that cost him his hearing 18 years earlier. He reported that he felt something give in his back. Dr. Palmer examined the man's spine and found a misaligned vertebra. He placed the man on a bench, and with a quick, short thrust adjusted the spine. These "hand treatments" were repeated several times. On the third attempt a "click" was heard in the spine. The "click" erased 18 years of deafness and Mr. Lillard began to hear again.
