The Association of Chiropractic Colleges defines Chiropractic as "...a health care discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health."

Daniel David Palmer started the Chiropractic movement in 1895. Palmer realigned a painful vertebra of a man who was deaf. After the adjustment the man regained his hearing and was pain free. Mr. Palmer continued to study the spine and how its manipulation might impact overall health. He believed that certain illnesses were caused by compromised nerve activity as a result of misaligned vertebra or vertebral subluxation. His theories on spinal manipulation are still at the center of chiropractic care today. The term "chiropractic" comes from the Greek "chir-" which means to the hand and "prassein", to do which equals to do with the hands or manipulate. In 1898, Mr. Palmer founded the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
